Travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by plane
==========================================
Russian air companies tend to hold sales for Moscow-St Petersburg flights, so you can buy pretty cheap tickets with some luck. In combination with a short duration of flight (1 hour) a plane seems to be a very profitable and fast option.

In reality, however, you will spend few hours for transfer to and from the airports in both cities, as they are located outside the city. So add some 3 hours to the flight duration and 1-4 thousand rubles to pay for the transfer.

Travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by train
==============================
There are many trains a day so it should be possible to get a ticket on the spot (except weekends and public holidays). Nevertheless, bear in mind, the earlier the reservation is made, the greater the chance to buy a ticket at a lower price. Ticket sales start 45 days before the travel (60 days for Sapsan).
Here are the two best option to travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by train.

Travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by sapsan
===============================
Sapsan (also known as Peregrine Falcon) is a high-speed train running between Petersburg and Moscow 9 times a day.
Sapsan departs from Moscow Leningradsky railway station, arrives at St Petersburg Moskovsky railway station, and makes this trip in 4 hours.
The fare is comparable with an air ticket price.
Each Sapsan train has 10 cars, one of which is 1 class, one is business class, the rest are economy class and a restaurant. Services of the 1st and business class include hot meal, as well as press and a travel case. In Car # 6 there are seats for disabled, space for a wheelchair and a toilet for disabled.

Travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by train
===========================
There are about 10 overnight trains, which take about 8 hours to travel.
The prices vary from €25 (for 3rd class common carriage) to €270 (for the 1st class). Generally, trains leave Moscow at about 11 pm and arrive to St Petersburg the next day at 7 am.
Look for the suitable train on the website of Russian railways.

If you are on a tight budget or trying to save money, with an overnight train you will kill two birds – transportation and accommodation for a night. In addition, overnight train passengers do not lose daylight time.
The down side of high speed or overnight trains is that you do not see the countryside scenery, which is quite interesting. At the speeds that Sapsan moves you just whisk along the whole way. However, trains depart from/arrive at the stations located in the very city centre, while the airports are miles away.

Travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by bus
==============================
The bus is the most unusual way to travel between St Petersburg and Moscow and suitable for those who have not got train tickets, as there are days of high demand when all tickets may be sold out (especially weekends and public holidays).
See the timetable (in Russian only) for buses from St.Petersburg to Moscow and from Moscow to St.Petersburg.

The journey takes 10-12 hours that almost 3-4 hours longer then travel by train and is not as comfortable as train; however, it is slightly cheaper.

Travel between St Petersburg and Moscow by boat
==========================
You can choose a river cruise that operates between Moscow and Petersburg along the Volga River, passing through White Lake, the Svir River, Lake Onega with its picturesque islands, the Baltic Channel which is one of the main engineering projects of the early Soviet era, Lake Ladoga, the largest freshwater lake in Europe, and the Neva River. But there are no boats as pure transportation on this route – only cruises.
The length of the route is almost twice as much as the overland one: 1,300 km, the trip duration is 5-7 days. Navigation starts in the end of April or even in May and ends in October.
